Who do you give it to?

Give to the side that invited you

The bride's family and the groom's family each invite their own guests.

What you can give at a wedding

  • Money in an envelope: the most common gift, and right at any level of closeness.
  • Gold jewellery: a ring for the bride, say, is a valuable alternative to money, mostly given by those close.
  • A gift voucher: a newer choice if you would rather not hand over cash.

How much to give, and what it depends on

  • How close you are: family and the closest relatives usually give more.
  • How many of you are coming: the hosts pay for every guest's seat.
  • If that family came to your family's wedding, you may have a note of what they brought. Some give back about the same.

How to hand the gift over without awkwardness

  • Put the money in an envelope; in some places it is handed over openly.
  • Give it to a relative or someone close on the side that invited you.
  • Don't count money out into the couple's hands at the table, in front of everyone: it is awkward for all.

What the best man and maid of honour do and give

Traditionally, the groom's best man pays for the church ceremony (if there is one) and the civil signing, arranges the wedding car and also gives a gift; the bride's maid of honour brings the bouquet and a gift.

Appliances for the kitchen

Agree it with the couple first, or buy it together with relatives.

A gift card for the home

If you do not know what they lack, they choose themselves.

Do not give these at a wedding

Don't give

  • A clock: it is believed to foretell separation
  • A knife or scissors: they are believed to bring quarrels
  • A kettle, an iron or a tea set: they often get duplicated
  • Perfume and clothes: hard to match their taste
  • A mirror or an empty wallet: an old superstition
